BMW hottest car at Detroit auto show
As is often the case, BMW brings a handful of vehicles to the auto show to serve as executive shuttles during the press and industry preview days. After fulfilling their duties, cars are then shipped back to BMW’s North American offices in New Jersey. Yesterday, outside the Westin Book Cadillac hotel, a transport truck began loading these vehicles for the return trip home. According to Detroit’s WXYZ Channel 7, the vehicle’s keys were left within the Bimmer’s cabin, but the car itself wasn’t running.
BMW says the missing car is a 2011 750i xDrive sedan, painted in Dark Graphite metallic, and valued at roughly $94,000. Standard equipment on every 7 Series is the BMW Assist telematics service, which does incorporate a tracking function.
The dark gray BMW 750 I xDrive sedan stolen Wednesday night was one of about 20 vehicles being used for executive transportation in and around the auto show, said Stacy Morris, marketing communications manager for BMW of North America.
The car has a tracking device called BMW Assist. "We're tracking the car right now," Morris said--Free Press auto critic Mark Phelan says most of the automakers represented at the North American International Auto Show have vehicles -- including high end cars -- available for executives to use--Phelan says many vehicles in BMW's fleet cost more than $94,000.
The car was one of more than a dozen BMW sedans used to ferry executives and guests around town during the show--On Thursday morning, police said they were still looking for the gray four-door BMW.
BMW, which featured its glitzy 650i convertible at the Detroit auto show, said it remains committed to the event--"It's just an unfortunate incident," BMW spokeswoman Stacy Morris said.
